To properly arrange a flower vase, you can’t just dump some random flowers in it. Those flowers still need care and tending just like when they were first picked. Here is a simple way to arrange a flower vase. If you follow the instructions closely enough, your visitors will talk for days about how beautiful your home is.

There are two main types of vases. Glass and opaque. While some people like opaque vases better than glass ones, I believe that glass vases are the better choice to put flowers in them.

The first step is in arranging a flower vase is to  get one medium sized  glass vase, and fill it with water. Make sure that the water is fresh. Some people even suggest putting just a drop of bleach, so feel free to try that to.

Now to prepare the flowers. You should take about about 10 to 12 flowers with short stalks. Using your kitchen knife, cut all the thorns from them. Do the same with any leaves that might fall in the water. This is important, as if those leaves fall in the water, it will become smelly and murky and those two don’t go well in with the flower arrangements.

Next step is to line the vase. You can use any long leaves for this, but aspidistra leaf is best if you can find it. Again its no trouble if you can’t.

Next comes perhaps the most important step in arranging a flower vase. Cutting the stems. You want your flowers to appear to be floating above the vase, rather than just sticking out as each if them pleases. The stems should be cut so that the flowers are about 5-6 cm above the top of the vase. If you do not want the flowers to wilt quickly, you should cut the stems at about 45 degrees. Use a ruler if you want to be precise. This will make it easier for the flower to suck the necessary water from the bottom of the base. Roses and similar, woody stems should also be split straight through the middle for about 2 cm.

To finally finish the arrangement, put the prepared flowers in the vase filled with water. Make sure that they are evenly spread around the vase, meaning that there are no more flowers on one side over the other and that they are all of equal height.

Two people in particular have to b thanked for bringing this language to Europe. First is the wife of the British consul in Constantinople, Ottoman Empire, Lady Mary Wortley Montague. A prominent female writer of her time, she wrote a number of books while staying at her husbands side so far from England. Her famous Turkish Embassy Letters she wrote in 1717 were finally published after her death in 1763. That was the same year she finally returned to England

The second person to bring the language of flowers to the Europeans is  Seigneur Aubry de la Mottraye. He wrote

about his visit to the Swedish king Charles the twelfth, while being exiled in Turkey. His work was published in 1727 and was very soon translated in to English language.

Thanks to these two people, and others that followed them, the language of flowers found its way in the early 18th century Europe and America. People found a new way, a secret and more romantic way to say things like “I love you”, “I miss you” or “forgive me”. A new, elegant language was spreading like a wildfire and no one could stop it.

Charlotte de Latour’s Le Langage de Fleursin, which was published in December 1819, was the book that allowed this language to grow rapidly more than any before or after it.  It is still not quite known how Charlotte de Latour was, but it is believed that it is a pseudonym for Louise Cortambert, wife of a geographer, Eugene Cortambert.

Over the years and decades to follow, this language was becoming less and less “spoken”. This is not because people have become rapidly less romantic, but in a large part thanks to the fact that people were finding new meanings of flowers and new ways to express their emotions. The true language of flowers is now known only to few.

To better understand the meanings of some flowers and the messages they tell, here are some flowers and their secret meanings:

A white carnation signifies that you are remembered, while a red one is another way to say “my heart aches”. The simple yellow sunflower symbolizes adoration, and the Magnolias usually stand for love of nature and dignity. The lovely Daisies have many different meanings, but the most common ones are those of purity and innocence. A red Rose, the most popular messenger of love is a symbol of passionate love and a combination of different rose colors means unity.

Certainly, when it comes to anniversaries, no date is more important than your wedding anniversary. This important date should really be commemorated with a big bouquet of your partner’s favorite flowers. Add to that a nice present like a box of chocolates or some other nice present.

If you want to congratulate someone else on their anniversary, and you are out of town so you can’t give them the flowers in person, remember that almost all florist today can make this delivery for you in no time. To be completely honest, this is often due to the fact that we leave this job for the morning of our anniversary or the day before and than we have to rush to the florist to get the flower arrangement, than to the mall to get the present, and all of this without any plan whatsoever. But the time when we could say that we are to busy has long passed. Today you can order flowers online in just a few clicks. Just choose the flowers you know she likes best (you do know what those are, do you?), don’t mention anything to her, act as you have forgot all about this date and watch her face as she finally gets the flowers.

A Tulip is the national flower and the symbol of Holland. Yellow Tulip tells  “there’s sunshine in your smile.”, a red Tulip could mean “believe me”, but it is also a strong statement of love, while a variegated Tulip says ” you have beautiful eyes” to someone.

Carnations come in many different colors. In Christian folklore, this flower appeared on Earth for the first time when Jesus Christ carried the cross to Golgotha. In general, Carnations mean fascination, but there are meanings for every specific color of this flower so a white Carnation means innocence, purple capriciousness, solid color Carnation means “yes!” while a stripped Carnation has a “no!” meaning and is given or better sent if you have to refuse someone, but just can’t tell them in person. A yellow Carnation is a way to tell someone that they have disappointed you, and a red Carnation shows your admiration for someone.

Hyacinth is a flower dedicated to the Ancient Greek god of sun, and patron of the artists, Apollo. It is generally a symbol of sports and games. A blue one is a symbol for consistency, white Hyacinth tells “I’ll pray for you” and a red or pink means play. If someone sends you a purple one, than they would like your forgiveness for something.

Chrysanthemum has an especially high place in Japan as it is a symbol of the Japanese Imperial family. If you talk the language of love than the red Chrysanthemum tells “I love you” and a white one means “truth”.

Lily is another popular flower with many different meanings for each color. A tiger Lily is a symbol of wealth and prosperity, a white lily tells someone “it is heavenly to be together with you”. For Chinese, a Day-lily is a symbol of mothers and a Lily of the valley means “you have made my life complete” but also humility and sweetness.

Rose is a flower with many different meanings and messages, depending on the color and type of this flower. Sometimes, it has a various meaning if the Rose is in full bloom or not. The most popular flower of all, red rose, is a worldwide accepted way to say “I love you”. A dark crimson one is a symbol of mourning, while a hibiscus one means “delicate beauty”. If you want to tell someone that you love them you should send a single rose, a red one is perfect for this message, but if you want to show your gratitude for something, than a bouquet of mature roses is required.

Representing the month of June is the flower that has been the object of songs and poems more than any other. The Rose. We usually think of a red rose, but there are many different colors of roses and each color has its meaning. A red rose symbolizes passion.

Delphinium got its name from the word Delphi’s because it looks a bit like a nose of a dolphin. It is a symbol of open heart and a flower attached to the month of July. Other names are Lark’s heel by Shakespeare, Lark’s claw and Knight’s spur

August is the month of Gladioli. This flower derives its name from the name of the Roman sword gladius and is often called sword lily. It represents sincerity and honesty. Most species of this flower are native to the tropic regions of south Africa and some originate from the Mediterranean.

Aster, the flower whose name means star on ancient Greek, is the flower of September. Aster usually symbolizes love. This lush textured flower has long been considered enchanted. It was even believed that a perfume made from the leaves of Aster can drive evil spirits away.

Marigold is another flower that has a high place in Christian religion and culture. Often called Mary’s gold in honor of the virgin Mary, mother of Jesus Christ. In other cultures, however it has a completely negative connotation and represents jealousy and cruelty. This is the flower of October.

Chrysanthemum can be found in many different colors and each color has its own meaning but most of are those of happiness and optimism. Chrysanthemum is the flower of November. Its original color is golden (chrys). To Confucius this flower is a perfect object of meditation.

And finally, December. The last month of the year, which by itself has an important meaning in most cultures is represented by the Poinsettia which is also known as the Christmas Star. This flower grows only in Central and South America and is a symbol of merriment.

Okay, some people are just not good with remembering dates, or are just too busy to go to the flower shop and organize a bouquet of flowers, make a short note end send the flowers. I can, at least partial understand those people. It’s not much of an alibi, but it is an alibi. Of course, they would have to send a bigger bouquet after to mend the damage they have caused, but that is their problem. Let them boil in their own stew.
